I have had a hard drive failure, and I've also had EHDs die on me. As frustrating and upsetting as those failures were, I am thankful that I never lost my pictures, and thankfully I didn't lose many of my scrap supplies either. But I have had the pain of knowing that my wedding pictures were deleted from a camera before they were downloaded and saved, and I only wish the photographer and I had known about this resource then!
Recuva is a free file recovery program from Piriform, the makers of CCleaner. I must add that I have never used the program myself; however, I have shared this resource with scrapping friends who've accidentally deleted photos from their memory cards, and Recuva was able to restore the photos. Recuva recovers photos, music, documents, even emails. You can learn more about Recuva and download it for free here.
Again, I hope that you never need to use this program, but just in case, it's good to know there's a program out there to help you! Have a wonderful week, and happy scrapping!

thanks for the link. I was just dying to read this post b/c my EHD did crash. Cannot ready the files when you try to open one and makes this horrible grinding noise. Anyone out there know what I can do? My husband inquired and its like $650 or so to get the files off b/c requires a 'clean room' etc.?????? Pls help. I'd say I have about that mudch in scrapbooking supplies/kits/templates but so many I never even used AND all the incomplete and complete pages I've done. Love any input here. Thanks!!! love you TSD.
ReplyDeletehey Kristen. Had my EHD die a couple weeks ago. Luckily, I had most everything backed up...but did lose enough to make me scramble. I had used R-Studio for recovery when it got fussy before, and it worked beautifully, even after a format (which is what the drive would require to work again). Its not free, but it works. I have used Recuva before, too..and it DOES work. Its just not as comprehensive as R-Studio.
ReplyDeleteGrinding noises are NOT good. You can try running a CheckDisk...but it may not be able to read the drive to do it. We took ours into the shop, where one tech even used is own EHD of the same brand to try to jumpstart it....no luck. It was only a year and 2 months old, too...and barely a quarter of the 1TB was used.
I wish you all the luck in the world...been there!
I had my HD die last year. Unfortunately, I didn't know what I was doing and did a computer restore and the computer wiped out my second internal HD to start up a new system. So I lost everything on both hard drives. I thought everything would be okay because I had been using Mozy. However, Mozy only backed up what was on my first HD (320 GB hard drive), but didn't back up the other HD (750 GB) which was nearly full with digital scrapbooking kits and all of my layouts. I tried getting some of my kits back from the stores I bought them from, but only got a small portion of my full collection. I ran a recovery program, but for some reason I only got my JPG's, no PNG files. I wish I had known about Recuva then.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the info. I have never had to use this resource and hopefully will never need to. But it is always good to know things like this before rather then after the accident.
