Challenge Thursday

Are you ready for another challenge, Trixie fans, to get your mojo moving?? I don't know about you, but sometimes I do get in a slump and just cannot seem to pull a page together. A challenge is always a great way to get some inspiration and to sometimes think outside your little creative box.

My challenge for you this week is to take an element and use it in a way that is not it's intended purpose.

The easiest example is a picture frame. It is usually used to completely frame a picture, right? Well, I like to sometimes skew my frame on top of the photo just to draw some emphasis to that particular photo. I especially like to do this when I have a multi photo layout. Another different way for the frame is to place it behind your photo. I have done both of these ways in my example layout below - I used Trixie's Spring in the Meadow kit for this layout.

Are you inspired? I sure hope so!! Can't wait to see what creative ways you will be using your elements. Don't forget to post your layout in Trixie's gallery so we can oooh and aaaah over each of them and so that you can be included in the monthly drawing for a free kit!!

TTT Tuesday - The Importance of Antivirus Software

Hi scrappers!

Amy here, bringing you another installment of TTT Tuesday. Today I want to talk about the importance of antivirus software. File sharing sites, where a lot of digiscrap freebies are often hosted, can be vulnerable to viruses, and if your antivirus software isn't up to date, you could accidentally end up with a nasty virus or two.

What is antivirus software, you may ask? It's a program that is installed on your computer that protects you from the known viruses out there. Of course viruses are always evolving so it's very important once you choose an antivirus software to make sure you keep it up to date. Most software can be set to automatically update however often you want it to. You also want to make sure your antivirus software is scheduled to do a virus check every so often. Personally mine is set to update for new virus protection every day, and I also have it set to run a virus scan every night while I am sleeping.

What are some of your options for virus protection?

The popular paid versions are Norton Antivirus and McAfee Antivirus. When you buy a new computer, it usually comes with a free trial of one or the other of these two. A few other paid versions that are recommended are Kaspersky Antivirus, WebRoot and Trend Micro. Any of these are great programs to choose from.

You can't afford or don't really want to shell out a lot of money for virus protection? No problem, there are several free versions as well. I personally use AVG Free, and I have used it for years. For a free program it works wonderfully. Avast is another really good free antivirus. Trixie and her Geek Squad hubby swear by it.

Mac computers are slightly different. They don't run on Windows, so they usually aren't vulnerable to viruses, but as Macs gain in popularity that may change. They don't come with virus protection installed but Norton does make a Mac version that will run on an Intel machine.

As you surf the web, you should always err on the side of caution and common sense. No antivirus program is 100% foolproof. It's up to the end user to be careful and use caution when clicking and surfing. Obviously, the standard rules apply... if you receive an email that asks you to visit an account with a certain company and log in to perform a specific action, it is best not to utilize the link in the email. Instead, navigate to that site on your own, then log into your account and perform the necessary task requested in the email, if there is truly action necessary. Often, these emails are "spoof" or "phishing" emails that are nothing more than an attempt to collect your information, and then exploit it.

Use common sense when enjoying social networking sites like Facebook. If something seems "sensational" or "too good to be true," it probably is! Avoid liking or clicking on such links or ads because you could end up with a virus or with a hacked account.

If you do get infected, use common sense and do not give your credit card information to any pop-up application that requests payment or promises removal of the virus! These pop-up applications are nearly always a virus in disguise that is attempting to mine your financial information and can even be a form of identity theft.

In short - be careful out there!! Protect yourself with a good antivirus program, use common sense and caution when surfing... and when all else fails and you end up with an infection, take your computer to a qualified professional to seek help in removing it.

As long as you keep up with updating and scanning your computer, you should be able to avoid most viruses. Most antivirus software today also has real time blocking of sites that have virus threats. If you try to go to a page where there is a known virus threat, the software stops you from entering the site to protect you. All of this helps in keeping your computer, and your scrapbooking files safe.

Make It Hybrid- Pinwheels

Happy Monday and welcome to Make It Hybrid Monday! Looking for an easy paper craft to create with the kids, decorate for upcoming events or just celebrate the spring weather? Then look no further. Paper pinwheels are one of the easiest projects to create and so versatile to use with just about everything.

Supplies that you will need:
- 6x6 inch double sided patterned paper
- 1/8 inch hole punch
- Brads/ thumbtacks/ push pins
- Pencils with erasers

Step 1: With your patterned paper, fold paper in half diagonally, corner to corner. This will create four triangles on your square paper. Using the fold lines as guide, cut on each line up to you are about 1/2 inch from center of the square.

Step 2: Punch a 1/8" hole in the left corner of each triangle. Punch a 1/8" hole in center of square- You can also use a paper piercer if you need.

Step 3: Fold every other corner into the center. Insert your brad/thumbtack/pin into the center through all of the centers. If you are using the thumbtack/ pin, push it into the eraser. If you are using a brad, wrap the ends around the eraser.

Step 4: Admire your completed pinwheel

I used Puddle Jumpers to create these bright and fun pinwheels and added additional punches under the brad to create some spring table decorations.

You can also use pinwheels as a cupcake topper, as a spring decoration, or even strung together for a banner. The possibilities are endless so can't wait to see what you create and don't forget to link us up when you do so we can leave you some love. Happy crafting!

Challenge Thursday!

Hi all! Carolyn here to bring you this week's Challenge.

I am in love with all those spring colors out there. If you look at my gallery, you probably know that my photos are usually very bright. I LOVE bright, bold colors. I guess it's because my kids seem so bright and bold to me. It is hard to dampen them down! That is the dilemna I sometimes have: to try and convey a more peaceful atmosphere in my layouts. Because my children are generally dressed in bold, bright colors, it is hard to convey any kind of peacefulness with them!

So your challenge is to try and convert a bright, bold photo to something serene and peaceful. Here is an example from me:

In the orignal photo, Jessica was wearing a bright red t-shirt and is surrounded by bright greenery. But I really wanted to convey how relaxing the surroundings were and how restful we felt there. Bold colors would not do the trick. So I changed the colors of the photo to match the mood and used Trixie Scraps fabulous kit, Quality Time, to add to the serenity.

Here's a fabulous one from CT member, Candy:

Candy used Standing Alone Vol. 1 Template Pack and Well-Suited by Trixie Scraps Designs. Her hat is bright, bold and multi-colored, so not a good fit for this layout at all. She changed it to black and white to eliminate the distraction of the hat and put the focus back on her face.

Jamie, one of our guest Stars, has this awesome layout to share with us:

This photo was taken a couple weekends ago at a Women's Retreat for her church. Since it was an impromptu photo, nobody matched or even coordinated - and the background was a wood paneled wall. So she changed it to a purple hue to soften it and coordinate it with the colors of the Spring in the Meadow kit.

Kris has this beauty to share, using the new Adoption Day kit by Trixie Scraps Designs:

Bree, of course, is a pro at getting her pictures to perfectly match the kits she uses:

The blanket here was yellow, Aiden's shirt was bright orange and Libby was wearing pink. So of course, Bree needed to tone down the screaming colors for this layout! Bree used Spring in the Meadow by Trixie Scraps Designs

Bree used Croaky Kisses from Trixie Scraps Designs

So now when you find the PERFECT kit for your photos, but the colors do not match, you know exactly what to do! Let's see what you can do with YOUR photos! Remember to use at least 80% Trixie Scraps products. Good Luck!

Wordy Wednesday

Hi all, Shauna here to let you know about the May book club. But first, I want to thank Sharon and Karon for joining us last night for our discussion of Julia's Chocolate. It was lots of fun!!!! The book club meets in the chat room here at Trixie Scraps. For May we've picked the book "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. Here is a synopsis

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen’s best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody’s business, but she can’t mind her tongue, so she’s lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women — mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends — view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

Here is the flier to tell you all the details of the next book club meeting.

Hope to see you there.
