Master's Monday: Using Gender Specific Kits in Non Gender Specific Ways

A couple weeks ago, Carrin brought us a Master's Monday on ways to used themed kits in non-themed ways. Today we're going to explore that a bit more and play a bit with kits that are aimed towards one gender or the other, but show you ways that Stars have used them for other ways.

We're going to start with the kit Blue Jean Boy.

As the kit name implies, this kit was made with the male gender in mind. The colors are very dark and the elements in this kit are much more masculine in nature than feminine.

Jennifer chose to use this kit for a layout about reading and books and while her photos are of her boys, this is one layout that could just as easily have girls in the picture.

I absoulutely love the way Jenny chose to use this kit as a way to highlight some moments from a family vacation. I don't think I would've thought to use this kit that way.

Bratitude is a kit that is full of girl power and teen drama. There's tons of glitter elements and other fun embellishments in this kit, but there are ways to use this kit in other ways.

One such example comes from Lori. I love that she used this kit for photos at the beach. While you maybe wouldn't want to pair pictures of just boys in this way - family photos and shots like that would be perfect.

Trixie has kits called It's Her Birthday and It's His Birthday.

While I couldn't find any layouts made for It's Her Birthday in a non gender specific way, I found one for It's His Birthday. Helen created this layout of a fun little play date.

Prima Ballerina is all about the little dancer in your life. With it's pink and black color palette and dancer silhouettes, it's hard to imagine this kit being used for anything else.

Kassie, however, did just that. She used this kit to scrap her kids Easter clothes. Awesome idea.

Riding With Boys and Riding With Girls are another set of kits designated for each gender. But once again there are some scrappers out there who figure out a way to use these kits in a non-gender specific way.

Kris used Riding With Boys to scrap this vacation snapshot.

Jenny used Riding With Girls to scrap this set of snapshots, which could easily be used for young boys as well or for little group pictures.

The next kit in our list is That's My Boy.

Once again, this kit is completely aimed towards boys. The more subdued color palette and elements that work quite well for more masculine layouts. However, a few of our Stars were able to use this kit in ways that weren't completely aimed at males.

Lori used this kit to scrap a photo of her son, but I can easily see a picture of a girl in black and white working just as well. Or even a fun patriotic page.

Helen took this kit and completely made me believe it wasn't aimed towards boys. She took photos of little girls and made this layout completely feminine.

And while Kassie used this kit as a chance to scrap a photo of a set of best buds, any sort of close relationship photo would work well in this layout.

Finally we have Trimumphant.

While the kit doesn't initally scream boy, the color palette is a bit more masuline than feminine. That doesn't mean this kit can't be used in a variety of ways.

Helen took this opportunity to scrap a great moment her daughter's life.

Berniek used it to create a fun layout with a friend.

Shauna actually used this kit to scrap a photo of a deceased pet. I love her simple, but heartfelt journaling.

And I used this kit to create a layout about playing games and included pictures of different family members.

There are so many more examples of non gender specific layouts using gender specific kits in the gallery. Go take a look for yourself. And while you're there, upload a few layouts that you've made using gender specific kits in non gender specific ways.
